Amazing hotel with amazing view

Such generous people who helped us when we had an issue with our BnB. The room was nice and clean, the breakfast was delicious, and the view of the loch was the icing on the cake. I wish I could give them 10 stars !
Needless to say: if you want some quality time, I recommend you book a room here.

Simple, clean, aged.

The location of the hotel is quite good, the house is overall clean even if it has clearly come of age. I had a single room in the attic - really very small, only a relatively short bed (max 1.90m). The bathroom was clean but in need of renovation. The mirror shelf was crooked, water came out of the tap sparsely and the shower is only enough for washing hair - or you take a lot of time to shower. The water pressure is just not enough for the second floor. It can take some getting used to the fact that the water comes from its own source - i.e. does not get to the clarity of the German water (but according to the notice is regularly tested). Breakfast is ok with an emphasis on hearty. Dinner I had only once - was ok, but not a culinary highlight. I thought it was a shame that the bar was so closed from 21:00 - so closed. If you came later, that was it with the bagger. The staff there are friendly and at least one of them is happy to help. The next time I travel to the Highlands, I would try a different hotel.

Disappointing - a great location squandered

This hotel has a beautiful location but it does not take advantage of it. The lochside area is very run down and many of the rooms face the car park. Our room was reasonable though rather tired, but the ensuite was very poor. The towel rail was rusty and fell apart when you took a towel off it. The staff were a mixed bag.
Although they allow dogs in the room, they are not allowed in the restaurant.
I would not stay here again.

Much better than expected - thoroughly enjoyable

Such a lovely area
Hotel is clean and tidy, staff are friendly and helpful and breakfast was delicious.
The best part were the views from our room, which was perfectly comfortable
So, despite previous poor reviews we had a great stay.
I would recommend ignoring poor reviews and coming along trying for yourself - it's well worth the visit.

Avoid at all costs

A group of 4 friends, we stayed here as part of our journey around the NC500. Booked earlier on in the year and initially hesitant due to some of the negative reviews, we chose to book anyway due to the stunning scenery and setting at Loch Maree.
On our arrival, we were ‘greeted’ by an unkempt and disinterested man who gave us our keys. There was no explanation as to how to find our rooms and when we returned we were advised ‘all of the rooms are on the first floor’.
Having read some of the reviews we can now see that this is a ‘Dog friendly’ hotel and this explains the stench around the stairways and hall. The beige carpet was matted and unclean.
We stayed in room 11, a double room which was incredibly small, with an extremely large tv which restricted already limited space around the bed. The room, thankfully, was clean and did not smell like the rest of the hotel. I have never seen a notice advising residents against flushing tea bags down the toilet before, but it made me chuckle! The yellow water was a little off putting but we couldn’t complain about the pressure of the shower, maybe we were just fortunate!
Our friends stayed in the adjacent twin room which was a little roomier but the toilet was broken. They suffered with very poor water pressure, the window had a broken glass pane and the packet of biscuits left by the kettle already opened!!!
The light fitting outside the room was frankly dangerous with the wires exposed.
We decided to have a drink and sit outside, allowing us to enjoy the view and sunshine. The view was stunning but so much more could be made of the garden area, which leads down onto Loch Maree.
The logistics of getting from the garden to the bar was interesting and ordering some drinks I asked if there was a more direct route was available to get from the bar to the outside space. The barman said I could go through the staff area, and moved a portable room divide to allow me entry. He muttered ‘it’s a bit of a mess though’. This was a small, cluttered space where a staff member sat drinking Jamieson’s whisky at 4 pm. I suspect he may have been the chef. The room stank of cigarettes and the fact that the bar worker felt it appropriate to allow customers into this area was utterly shocking. Immediately I advised my friends that I did not want to eat in the restaurant that evening given what I had seen. This was confirmed by a friend who also was offered entry through this short cut. There was very little options around for food but a drive was preferable than staying there!
We returned later on that evening and had a drink in the lounge area. Shocked that the bar closed at 9 pm and surprised by the price of drinks, we were equally appalled at the smell of smoke that emanated close to the reception area, from the staff area once again.
Breakfast was an equal joy!! I ordered porridge which could have been eaten with a knife and fork and which I could have safely placed over my head without spilling as a drop! Coffee was cold and the quality of the ingredients of the full English extremely poor. The man who served us was disheveled, possibly after a late night in the staff mess and it was clear that he had little interest at offering a positive breakfast experience.
We returned to the garden area just before check out, amazed to see empty glasses littered all over the bar and tables. Unbelievable given that the bar had closed at 9 pm.
The only saving grace for this hotel was the view of the Loch and this hotel could be stunning if ran by staff who had the any interest in hotel management and positive customer service as opposed to just drinking and smoking o the job.
Would suggest avoiding this hotel at all cost!
